Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers about requesting equipment, eligibility, pickup and delivery, repairs, and donating equipment to REquipment.
REquipment provides gently used durable medical equipment and assistive technology at no cost to Massachusetts residents. Pickup, delivery, mailing, or other service-related fees may apply in some situations and will be explained before arrangements are confirmed.
Getting Equipment
Who can receive equipment from REquipment?
REquipment serves people who live in Massachusetts. Equipment is provided at no cost.
How do I find equipment that is currently available?
Browse Find Equipment to see devices that are currently available.
Inventory changes regularly as equipment is donated, prepared, requested, and redistributed. If you do not see what you need today, check again later or contact REquipment for help.
Do I need a prescription, doctor’s letter, or OT/PT evaluation?
No. A prescription, doctor’s letter, or occupational or physical therapy evaluation is not required to receive equipment from REquipment.
If you have never used equipment such as a power wheelchair, scooter, or stander, consider discussing your needs with a qualified medical professional to help determine whether the device is appropriate for you.
Do I need to show that my insurance will not pay for the equipment?
No. You do not need to prove that you have been denied coverage or have tried other funding sources before requesting equipment.
Can I receive equipment if I live outside Massachusetts?
No. REquipment serves residents of Massachusetts.
How long does it take to receive equipment?
Equipment listed in the inventory is generally ready for pickup.
Once the required paperwork has been completed, pickup can often be arranged within a few days. Delivery usually takes longer and may take two or more weeks depending on demand, location, and driver availability.
If you need equipment quickly, pickup may be the fastest option.
Pickup, Delivery, and Mailing
Is the equipment really free?
Yes. REquipment provides the equipment itself at no cost.
Fees may apply for services such as delivery, mailing, or pickup of donated equipment. These charges help offset transportation and service costs and do not change the fact that the equipment itself is free.
Is there a delivery fee?
REquipment currently charges a $20 delivery fee to help offset delivery costs. The fee may be waived in cases of financial hardship.
Delivery locations must be accessible. For safety reasons, REquipment drivers cannot carry large devices such as power wheelchairs, scooters, or lifts up or down stairs.
Can I pick up equipment instead?
Yes. Pickup can be arranged from the location where the equipment is stored. REquipment will coordinate a pickup time with you so the device is available when you arrive.
There is no charge to pick up equipment.
Can smaller items be mailed?
Yes. Smaller devices may be bundled and mailed for a flat $20 fee.
Smaller items may also be included with the delivery of a larger device or picked up from the location where the equipment is stored.
After You Receive Equipment
What happens if the equipment breaks?
Equipment is provided “as is.” Once you receive it, you are responsible for future maintenance and repairs.
If the equipment becomes unusable within one month of receiving it, contact REquipment. A substitute may be available depending on current inventory.
You can also review Repair Vendors for companies that may provide wheelchair and durable medical equipment repair services.
Do I have to return equipment when I no longer need it?
No. REquipment is not a loan program, so you are not required to return equipment.
However, equipment received through REquipment may not be sold. If you no longer need a device and it is still in good working condition, please consider donating it back so it can help someone else.
Donating Equipment
What kinds of equipment can I donate?
REquipment accepts many types of gently used durable medical equipment and assistive technology.
What can be accepted may change depending on storage capacity, condition, demand, and current inventory needs. Before submitting a donation, review Equipment We Accept for the latest information.
Does the equipment have to belong to me?
Yes. You must own the equipment you are donating and have the right to donate it to REquipment.
What condition should donated equipment be in?
REquipment generally accepts gently used equipment in good condition and typically considers devices under five years old.
Older equipment may be considered depending on the item and its condition.
How do I donate equipment?
Start by completing the Donate Equipment form.
REquipment will review the information and photos you provide and may contact you for additional details. Submitting the form does not automatically mean that the equipment can be accepted.
If your donation is approved, REquipment will explain the available drop-off or pickup options.
Can REquipment pick up my donation?
Pickup may be available for larger approved donations when drop-off is not possible.
A pickup fee may apply, and scheduling can take two or more weeks depending on demand and driver availability. Smaller assistive technology items generally cannot be picked up unless they are donated along with a larger piece of equipment.
